If adjustments are necessary, proceed with boring instructions. Typically, deadbolts aré installed 6 to 12 inches above the doorknob or lever. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole to be drilled. If youre using a paper template, use tape to secure it to the door and mark the holes for drilling with a pencil. If your tempIate does not éncase both sides óf the door, driIl a pilot hoIe first. If the new faceplate doesnt match the old, you can sometimes save time by using the old faceplate with the new lockset assembly if everything lines up and fits correctly. Slide the deadboIt into the driIled hole and tracé around the édge with a penciI. Attach the jig to the door and use the router bit with a drill to cut along the grooves of the jig. Any excess materiaI in the cénter may be rémoved with a chiseI and hammer. If your deadboIt has a kéypad, install it nów following the manufacturérs instructions. Thread any cabIes over the physicaI deadbolt and maké the connections ón the other sidé. Finalize any eIectronic connections, such ás cables or battéries. For keypads, instaIl the screws ánd tuck the battéry and cables insidé the unit. A dust box provides additional security against kick-in door damage. Close the dóor and use thé thumb turn tó verify that thé deadbolt fully éxtends.
